Tantra and Playfulness: What’s the Link?

You’ve probably heard the term Tantra used over and over again, usually in relation to sex. But awesome sex isn’t all there is to Tantra. Sexuality is but a small element in a much bigger design of immersion into awareness and meditation…

…into finding a way to Being-ness

This requires us to find in ourselves the ability to be present with whatever is happening in the moment, finding connection and intimacy with our bodies, our surroundings and everything in between.

And what better way to get into this frame of mind (or “no mind” as it may be), than stepping into an attitude of playfulness and curiosity, where we give up our goals and adopt an innocent viewpoint that is about what it all feels like instead of what may come of our actions?

In this video, Melody Kiersz, Self-Love & Intimacy Coach at Naked Wellness, shares her views on the link between Tantra and playfulness, as well as a short and fun exercise you can do to practice letting go of your inhibitions and playing freely utilizing your body as a tool.

As a Self-Love and Intimacy Coach, Melody Kiersz blends holistic health counseling, practical healing work, and ancient traditions into modern life with an intention to turn your self-consciousness into a Self consciousness that allows for a life full of discovery, curiosity, playfulness, adventure, freedom, and a real and true connection to yourself and others. She is an expert at creating a safe and intimate environment where participants feel free to be themselves, share their stories, and ask their burning questions.

The Future Depends on Play!

Trailer – SERIOUSLY! The Future depends on play from Gwen Gordon on Vimeo.

I just discovered this documentary-in-the-making (Seriously!) about the importance of play – yay! It’s so wonderful to see play being used in so many ways to make the world a lighter, better place. And, they use a clown nose in their logo…

As they say on their website, “when we do play, all the research indicates that our health, happiness, intelligence, creativity, adaptability, resilience, our relationships, work, test scores, our sex lives…let’s just say EVERYTHING improves. Why? Because spontaneous, free play goes with the grain of the whole universe.”

Sounds good to me…how about you?

Dream Interpretations: A Powerful Tool for Healing, Creativity and Divine Insights

Guest Post by Kamala-Barbara Smith ~ www.barbarasmithdreams.com
Dreamy Sky www.freeimages.co.uk

Dreamy Sky

Do you want to put your four to eight hours of sleep into an Amazing Potential of insight and creativity?

1.  You must be willing to take action and remember your dreams!

2.  Be prepared…have a journal and a pen by your bedside and write everything you remember when you awaken! Not later, when you awaken, if it’s 2 am do not wait until the morning when you get up! The dream will not be there!  It get lost on the pillow. :-) They fly in and out like sparks of insight and divine information to help us.

3.  You can ask a question to solve a problem, or access information for a project or healing. Write the question in the journal before bedtime. Be positive you will receive the answer…it may take a little practice.

4.  If you have a meditation practice it will expand your dreaming abilities. If you do not, I would suggest learning a simple practice before going to sleep. Reading a spiritual book or inspired reading of your choice.  It helps to set the mind and body for dreaming. As simple as closing your eyes and watching or counting your breath.  Keep breathing and relax. Do Not watch the 11 PM news unless you wish to have it carried over into your dream!  Do you want that?

Symbols & Metaphors

It takes patience and time to learn the art of dreaming, but we can all learn and become masters at this art.  In the ancient cultures it was a natural process from the time you were born to learn the symbols and metaphors of the culture you were born to. This is why dream symbols can vary from culture to culture.
Some Native American tribes believe seeing an owl is a symbol of death. Yet another tribe has the belief that seeing the owl is a sign of great wisdom.

Another example: If you had been attacked by a dog when you were a child you may feel fear or anxiety.  Therefore when you dream of a dog, that may be interpreted as fearfulness. Another person may feel unconditional love and loyalty around dogs, therefore in their dream, love and loyalty is what is being symbolized.

There are dream interpretation dictionaries available, however, I do not advise being totally dependent on their definition, as for the above reason. They are good for general usage.

I’ve had years of experience living with many cultures, traveling the world and practicing many religious philosophies. My background and my intuitive nature has given me the gift of accessing many levels of dream. I have studied and received a certification for advanced dream Tending. This is my passion, the dream, and wish to share the gift of interpretation with you.

I know we can all learn the skills and techniques to our own myth…our own dream. You do not need this background, you need only the desire to know the depth of your own world that lies waiting inside you. With some guidance, key words and listening to your inner wisdom you too shall be a powerful dreamer and wake up information and creativity that is just waiting to be remembered!

Sensual Food Meditation – Play with Your Food!

Reasons to Play with Your Food:

Feel the bliss of the moment; make it a meditation. Feel more fulfilled with less food. Make eating a playful, fun and conscious activity. Can be done by yourself or with others…

I can’t remember the last time I played with my food or really took the time to truly experience the food I’ve eaten. Then I took part in a sensual food meditation led by Amanda Young of Urban Goddess Chocolate. We took turns being blindfolded and had our partner feed us strawberries and then chocolate. It was such an unusual and delightful experience. In fact, I was so inspired by it that I asked her to put a new version on film.

Special bonus! I will be sending written step-by-step instructions on how to do a sensual food meditation to my newsletter/mailing list subscribers in my June Levity Letter. Subscribe in the box to the left or Sign Up Here.

In this video, Amanda explains her motivation behind leading these meditations. And then the fun begins…enjoy the whole video because you can experience the bliss vicariously! I promise you’ll be smiling…and wanting chocolate truffles.

Healing with the HU Sound

Sounds can be very powerful as I learned first-hand when beginning my healing journey in 2005. The reiki master I worked with, Daye Simpson, had me sometimes make the ‘HU” sound during sessions. HU (pronounced hyoo) is the vibration for opening, clearing and expansion through sound – it connects into the higher Angelic realms.

Daye explains and demonstrates ‘HU’ in this video. Be sure to keep reading after watching – I have a great story around HU-ing!

Sound Moving Energy Around

I had started to follow my own morning meditation/chanting ritual, and that included making the HU sound three times in a row. Had been doing that for a while, and then one day something extremely interesting happened.

As I finished toning the last HU, I felt like I’d suddenly been plugged into an electrical socket – there was energy buzzing back and forth from my elbows to my fingertips, and from my knees to my toes. Picture an electric razor going off inside your body – that’s how strong it felt.

I am Electric!

It was buzzing for minutes, and on top of that, my hands clamped shut and I couldn’t open them! Needless to say, I was freaking out! I called Daye as soon as I was able, and she told me that it was the energy moving as it needed to.

This experience confirmed to me that I was on the right path. It was an even bigger wake-up call to me that we are beings of light and energy, and that yes, the extraordinary can and does happen.

For more information on HU, check out Eckankar, a sound and vibration organization.

I hope you are enjoying my posts and information. Sign up for my newsletter in the upper left sidebar for more stories, tips and fun!

Have you experienced an extraordinary spiritual event? Please feel free to share!

Seek and Ye Shall Find

After the life-changing reiki session I had with Daye I started releasing on a massive scale. Many old wounds and lots of anger came up and I had to get it out. Not caring what the neighbors might think, I yelled, sometimes with pent up statements of anger towards a parent or others who had hurt me in my past. I punched pillows and whatever else I had around the apartment that was punchable. This went on over several months. I remember running into my neighbors one day, an elderly couple who were dealing with illnesses and asking them if they were okay. They said, “Are you okay?” It mattered not…

Seeking Out Healing

In the midst of all this clearing out, I also felt a great need to seek out other forms of healing. I had already begun my reflexology training, and was beginning to truly understand the power of energy work and how we hold traumas and emotions in our physical bodies. I was also opening up to other forms of alternative healing, energy release and learning about Buddhism.

Being in New York City certainly has its advantages. You can find pretty much anything here. I started out looking at yoga studio offerings and went from there. I participated in chanting circles, kirtans, sound healing, dance/expression workshops, meditation and learning about the Bhagavad Gita. My teacher at the time recommended the “Perennial Psychology of the Bhagavad Gita” written by Swami Rama. Here is one pearl of wisdom from this book that really speaks to me:

“But the mere belief in their teachings does not dispel the darkness of ignorance, for one needs more than belief in the sayings of sages. He needs to experience bliss directly. It is necessary for each person to light his own lamp, to dispel the darkness he himself has created. Though one has the sun, moon, stars, and all the lights to help him walk, he will stumble if he does not light the lamp in his inner chamber, for his clouded mind will blind his vision.”

The Answers are All Inside of You

I felt that the answer to all of my questions, fears and doubts were “out there” – external from me, in a way. That if I could find the right method or venue, I’d feel better. I was in a lot of emotional pain. It took several years for me to realize that I did indeed have the answers inside of me, and to really hear them, I had to learn to trust myself.

Laughing in “Tart” Moments

I’ve sought out many types of activities/events lately that have to do with increasing joy, laughter and sensuality, and at one of them, I met Simeon Darwick, Health Coach. He immediately made a positive impression on me because after introducing himself to the group, he offered everyone a hit of peppermint essential oil (one of my favorites!).

During the event, he laughed a lot and I learned later on that he is a laughter yoga instructor. He kindly offered to do some short laughter meditations with me from time to time. I’ve found them to be a great release, very centering and relaxing but also very therapeutic. It’s like exercising out all of the frustrations, worry, anxiety and heaviness of mind and body at once with a combination of laughter and breathing.

Here is a short video featuring Sim doing a laughter exercise around sweet and tart moments.

Tantra is Not Just About Sex…

There it was, in my Facebook news feed – a Halloween tantra event, shouting out to me! Perhaps like most people, I assumed that anything to do with tantra is sexual in nature. But in my quest for more ways to express myself and to bring in more joy I decided to check it out and see for myself what it’s really all about. And no, it wasn’t all that daring of me, as the event description made it pretty clear that it had many components to it, like a group discussion and dancing…

Luba Evans (Saraswati), the event hostess, had us do some breathing exercises to begin with and then asked us to go to three people of the opposite gender and give them a hug. While hugging, we were instructed to exhale with an “aaahhh” sound. I’m not sure I can even express how sweet and beautiful this felt. It’s almost hard to believe that something so simple, yet so deep and loving could be experienced so easily. This was my first impression of tantra, and heck yeah, I wanted to learn more!

I have learned a bit more since then, but allow me to cut to the chase and post this video. I was inspired to ask Luba to film an example of a basic tantric exercise – since we’re so close to Valentine’s Day, we thought a partner exercise would be fitting. Shakti refers to the woman and Shiva refers to the man. The video begins with the partners just completing toning out each chakra…enjoy!

Luba Evans is a free spirit dedicated to the evolution of consciousness since the beginning of times. She is a founder of New York Tantric Meet Up, Boston Tantric Meet Up, Galiana Meditation Retreat and the international movement Tantra Without Borders – entities that reflect her vision of personal growth, healing and spiritual realization.

Saraswati’s qualities encompass a lifetime of experience with a wisdom and compassion that goes beyond solitary mortal incarnations, in a style that combines many ancient teachings and genuinely new insights into a synthesis that is uniquely her own. Students say that her mesmerizing voice, her exotic accent, her connection to the source “immediately places them into primordial states of consciousness”.

Clowning for Real – Let the Fun and Games Begin!

The second time we went clowning was in July. The park was full of people. I was feeling a lot of resistance – a combination of tiredness from the week and fear of the unknown. This was my first time clowning amongst the public – the last time it was solely within a small group having a picnic. I was even debating backing out, but thankfully, I didn’t.

Barbara, our “Clown Curious” leader, noticed how reticent I seemed and later admitted to me that she was having doubts about my being ready to clown…

Clowning in Central Park

Clowns Sue & Lynn playing follow the leader

We put on our red noses and headed in to the park, starting out by playing follow the leader, and it was like a switch was flipped somewhere inside me – she is alive! The shift was instantaneous and amazing. I loved being the leader! I started off strong and didn’t look back. The rest of the evening was magical.

We then moved on to dancing and conversing with the people who we came across as we made our way through the park. This clowning marathon lasted for hours…

One of the earlier moments that stood out for me:

There was a young man rushing to get somewhere. Barbara caught up with him and walked at his brisk pace, while holding out her arm and pointing to her watch. He smiled.

Breaking the Rules – Yay for Non-Conformity!

Barbara, Sue and I came upon a nice lady sitting on a bench. We seated ourselves next to her and started a conversation. It turned out that she had been unemployed for a year, and just had an interview that day. We expressed our congratulations and excitement, and while she was reiterating that it was not a done deal, just an interview, we started shaking each others’ hands and congratulating each other. You could almost see the big question mark hovering above her head. It was a real “wtf” moment for her…! Didn’t feel great about that, but it’s so interesting to see what happens when the usual/expected conformities are not followed.

clowning in central park blowing horn

Lynn and Chris/Stampy clowning - that horn was a challenge...!

My Spontaneous Marriage

Fellow clown Stampy, a.k.a. Christopher Scheer who is a brilliant actor, professional clown, magician and dialect coach turned his attention to me and kept gesturing at his left ring finger. I asked if he was married to another fellow clown, Johnny. He shook his head no, pointed at his finger again, and then pointed at me. He wanted to marry me – aww! So Barbara, who really does perform wedding ceremonies, “married” us. I vowed to spank Chris every day. So off we went into the trees for our honeymoon. Unexpectedly, he knelt in front of me, put his head through my legs and lifted me way off the ground so I was hanging upside down and onto I don’t know what to keep from falling on my head. I yelled, “Oh my god, you’re crazy!” It had been, well, a reeaallly long time since I’ve been lifted like that…whew!

Five Moving as One

Our group was on one of the big lawns and I spotted a head warmer – a knit hat with no top. We all five of us stuck our hands through the hole at once and walked around like that for a few minutes. It was like we all suddenly became one; it felt to me almost as if I was relieved of having to be in the driver’s seat as I usually am and just let myself go with the flow of a group. It was so interesting to notice how we all reacted to things as a group – if something caught my attention, I couldn’t necessarily react to it because the others may not have noticed it or found it as compelling as I did. Definitely had to give up the urge to be in control…!

Sing Along

We encountered some young women who were singing a lovely song, so we chimed in with them. One of them was totally into our singing along with them and put her arm around Barbara, but another one was completely freaked out. The expression on her face was priceless – another “wtf” moment for sure! You could almost see her brain saying “this does not compute!” But eventually she was able to deal with it and she started singing again.

Clowning – an Introduction to Play and Boundary Pushing

If someone told me even nine months ago that I would become addicted to clowning, let alone that I would be clowning at all, I’d have looked at them like they had three heads. Clowning is not typically an activity of choice for those who are uncomfortable with putting themselves “out there.” And that’s exactly how I used to be.

Clown Barbara "Giving Birth" in the Mall on Mother's Day

Barbara "Giving Birth" in the Mall on Mother's Day!

It all started at a picnic in Central Park in June. When my friend, the awesome “Jester of the Peace,” Barbara Ann Michaels asked if I ever had a clown nose on before I told her no. Her response was, “oh, honey!” It was almost the same as if I’d told her that I was a virgin in my 40s – well, I was a clown nose virgin.

What Kind of a Clown am I?

Before I continue; when I talk about clowning, if you’re imagining a circus clown with wigs and makeup, imagine this instead…a red clown nose. It can be foam or plastic, small or large, with or without a strap – but just a simple red clown nose. The clowning we do is an interactive theater form based on human vulnerability, extremes, mayhem, surprise, sweetness and being real in the moment.

So we put on our noses, sneaked behind a big tree, peaked out at all the other picnickers and then set out to entertain, interact with them and shake up their worlds! Following Barbara’s lead, we hid behind people (yes, they noticed us), asked them about their picnic blankets and other things and sang songs with them, if I remember correctly.

Clowning Challenges and Human Behaviors

I noticed along the way that some folks were just fine playing with us, and there were a few who were not. This is not unusual. I’m happy to say that about 95% of the people we interact with when clowning enjoy playing along with us – with varying levels of enthusiasm, but they participate, nonetheless. That’s pretty impressive, and tells me that people really are happy to be spontaneous with play and fun. As Barbara says, everyone has a “yes” in them.

This first time out did feel a bit strange and foreign to me – the hardest part was talking with people. I was happy to leave that to Barbara. But the spirit of play was alive and kicking within me! As I was leaving, one man we clowned with told me that I seemed a bit uncomfortable, but that I can do it. Was he right? Find out in my next clowning adventure post… You don’t want to miss it folks – full body contact, flustered clown victims, and Lynn’s spontaneous marriage!

Here is a question for you: Is clowning something you want to try? Why or why not? And how do you feel in your body when you ask yourself that question?

My Spiritual Transformation – Reiki Unlocks the Door!

Back in 2005, I was at a crossroads. I was searching for my next career, and in so doing, found my path to awakening. Yes, it was quite a year…

Reflexology – Healer, Heal Thyself?

I had already started to learn about and experience alternative healing modalities such as reflexology. My sister recommended I have a “Plan B” in case my first career choice, urban planning, didn’t work out. So I looked into a few modalities and met with practitioners of rolfing (a.k.a. structural integration) and sound healing. But it was reflexology that really appealed to me.

So I took an introductory reflexology class in January and I loved it! One of my fellow students was an amazing woman named Daye Simpson. I’d never met anyone quite like her before – she was very bright and had a great energy about her. I learned that she was a reiki master and one of our classmates was going to do some sessions with her. After talking with her about it, I decided I wanted to try it too.

In this video, Daye explains reiki and how it works.

Reiki Healing Sessions – Allowing the Body to Release Pain and Trauma

Each reiki session can deliver very different experiences. I had about five sessions – sometimes it seemed that there wasn’t much happening at the moment and other times I felt an array of emotions arising, which Daye helped me exercise and release. I learned that when you cough during a session, it’s an indicator that something needs to be looked at/seen and released.

A Life Changing Moment

One day, in the midst of a session, I started coughing rather intensely. Suddenly, an image came up. I saw myself as a young child, around eight years old. I was in the kitchen of the apartment that I grew up in, looking in the cabinets for food to comfort myself. My “formative” years were far from harmonious, especially at home…food was really my only source of comfort.

Seeing myself as that scared and lonely child shook me to my core. It was like I was seeing a totally different person, through much more adult and insightful eyes. But then I realized that that scared and very unhappy little girl was still alive in me – and that was the life-changing moment that, in essence, woke me up and started my healing/spiritual journey.

Have you had a life-changing moment that shifted your path?

Laughter Attacks: Sometimes Inappropriate Laughter Feels So Good

Clowning, adult at play

Laughter is such a wonderful thing, but of course, it is sometimes not cool to laugh.

For a period of about 4 months when I was thirteen I would occasionally have laughing jags that would last between twenty and thirty minutes. Just laughing, non-stop. Of course, laughing out loud in some circumstances is not considered ‘appropriate.’

In hindsight I suppose it could have been worse, but when you’re thirteen, disrupting class and laughing in temple can be a pretty big deal…I have to say that my teacher handled it well. He said, “Lynn, you’ve been laughing for the past 23 minutes.” I don’t remember what came next but I assume his comment was sobering enough so that I was able to put a lid on it.

As I dug a bit deeper on the topic of inappropriate laughter, I came across some very interesting theories on what causes it and tips on how to keep your laughter under control.

Here’s one of my favorite tips: If it gets really bad, hold your nose and cover your mouth with that hand. Then people can’t see your grin, and you can laugh as hard as you wish inside yourself. You may start shaking, but that’s OK, it can be covered as crying. Try not to let any sound out, but if you do ease up by accident, it sounds much like a sneeze or a strange snort.

For more helpful tips, check out this article on how to stop laughing when you laugh at inappropriate times.

What was your most memorable moment of inappropriate laughter?
